Poke Rivals vs Pokémon Rivals

Poke Rivals, as a thing you can open today, is the browser battle game, the 3D Kanto world, or the Minecraft server. Pokémon Rivals, as a search, usually means the rival characters who show up across the main series. Google’s suggestions push the short query toward the long one. This page is the fork.

Three different targets

In the autocomplete file collected for this site, 26 of 26 letter extensions of poke rivals normalized to pokemon rivals. Across 1,631 suggestions, only three kept the words poke rivals: meaning, characters, and a hostile phrase. The joined spelling pokerivals pointed at the Minecraft server in all six of its suggestions. Monthly estimates from a third-party export put poke rivals near 300 and pokemon rivals near 2,500. I did not recheck those volumes this week, so I treat them as the export’s numbers, not as a fresh count.

What a rival is in the main series

Bulbapedia’s rival index describes a rival as a trainer who returns through the story and can often be rematched. The same index lists Blue; Silver; Brendan, May, and Wally; Barry; Cheren, Bianca, and N, plus Hugh; Calem, Serena, Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor; Hau and Gladion, plus Trace; Hop, Bede, and Marnie, plus Klara and Avery; Nemona, Arven, Carmine, and Kieran; and Urbain and Taunie. Most of them use the trainer class Pokémon Trainer. Blue and Silver use the class Rival. Some names are chosen by the player. The Hoenn and Kalos rivals are the hero you did not pick.

Four games have their own pages here because the public battle lists are long enough: Sword and Shield, X and Y, Platinum, and Legends Z-A. Everyone else stays in the index table. I am not reprinting encyclopedia paragraphs. Teams and places on those four pages are restated facts with links back to the pages that published them.
