Pokémon Sword and Shield rivals

Galar’s traveling group is Hop, the boy next door and Leon’s younger brother, plus Bede, the endorsed challenger who later runs the Ballonlea gym, and Marnie, the Spikemuth challenger whose brother Piers hands her that gym. The Isle of Armor adds Klara on Sword and Avery on Shield. None of this is the browser game that shares a similar name.

Hop’s main battle route

Hop takes the starter weak to yours: your Grookey gives him Sobble, your Scorbunny gives him Grookey, and your Sobble gives him Scorbunny. The published route is Postwick at levels 3–5, Route 2 at 5–8, Motostoke at 11–14, Route 5 at 18–21, Stow-on-Side at 28–33, Route 7 at 34–37, Circhester at 39–41, then Wyndon Stadium at 47–49. Two later meetings happen in the Slumbering Weald, first around 58–60 and then around 68–70. The final Slumbering Weald squad is Dubwool at 69, Snorlax at 68, Pincurchin at 68, Corviknight at 69, his fully evolved starter at 70, and Zacian or Zamazenta at 70 depending on version. After that loss he stops chasing Leon’s shadow and works with Sonia toward research.

Bede and Marnie

Bede enters under Chairman Rose. You meet him in Galar Mine around levels 13–16, again in Galar Mine No. 2 around 21–23, and at Stow-on-Side around 32–35, then in Wyndon at 51–53 after Opal has trained him as her successor. Marnie draws Team Yell with her. Published stops include the Budew Drop Inn around 24–26, Route 9 around 42–44, Wyndon around 47–49, and a Spikemuth rematch around 59–60 that later rounds push toward 72–74. She succeeds Piers as that town’s gym leader. I am leaving each mid-story move list on the source pages; the point of this guide is the order of places and the job each person ends up holding.

Armor rivals, split by cartridge

Klara, a poison specialist, appears if you are on Sword. Avery, a psychic specialist, appears if you are on Shield. Their map pins match: Fields of Honor first at levels 10–12, or 58–60 after becoming Champion, Warm-Up Tunnel around 18–19 with a rematch near 62–63, and the Battle Court around 23–25 with a higher-level story band of 65–67. Meeting either rival requires the Isle of Armor expansion for the corresponding base-game version. I keep them in one section because the schedule is shared and the roster is not.
